An invitation to worship...

Courage, humility, and wisdom

Good Day College Church,

It occurred to me last week, as I was preparing for this Sunday’s message, that it takes a bit of courage to go to church. And as I thought about it some more, it occurred to me that it also takes a little bit of humility. And then, as I thought about it even some more, I realized that it takes just a little bit of wisdom as well.

The reason I realized that it takes a bit of courage to go to church was because of the particular Bible readings that the Lord has for us. They are very challenging readings, and by that I mean, they call on us to examine how we are living. Frankly, not everyone is willing to allow the Holy Spirit to speak into their lives through the reading of the written word. Not everyone is willing to submit themselves to the correction of the Holy Spirit through the Bible. Thus, courage.

(The scripture readings for tomorrow are Psalm 146, 1 Timothy 6:6-19 and Luke 16:19-31, but don’t let that stop you from coming!)

The reason I subsequently realized that it takes a bit of humility to go to church was because we have to be willing to acknowledge that we need the Lord to speak into our lives. We have to confess that we have and would make a mess out of our lives without the Lord. Frankly, not everyone is willing to admit that they can’t run their life all by themselves. Not everyone is willing to admit that without Jesus, they are literally lost. (And I mean that literally.) Thus, humility.

And the reason I realized that it takes a bit of wisdom to go to church was because we have to recognize that it is through this process that God is saving us. As painful as it is to be corrected by the Holy Spirit through the written and spoken word, and as humbling as it is to recognize we need the correction, we have to recognize that it is worth it; that it is precisely through participation in the life of the church that God through Jesus Christ saves us. Frankly, not everyone understands that church is God doing nothing other than literally saving our lives. (And I mean that literally.) Thus, wisdom.

And it is the same for those who worship on-line with us, for they are hearing the same word. We are grateful for those who attend from their homes. You can find our service on our app or at one of these links below.

And tomorrow, Gospel Choir from Olivet, led by our own Dr. Marvin Jones, will be participating with us in our worship services!

So, I will say again what I say often: It is no little thing to go to church. Thanks for your courage, humility, and wisdom.

See you tomorrow!

Pastor Mark
