"Why Are You Afraid?"

Jul 19, 2026    Dr. John Bowling

Fear and anxiety are part of everyday human experience, but the story of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee offers a powerful perspective on both. The disciples were caught in a violent, life-threatening storm while Jesus slept peacefully at the back of the boat. When they woke Him in panic, He spoke to the wind and waves, and the sea became completely still. What followed was not relief but a deeper awe, because the disciples realized they were in the presence of Someone far greater than any storm. Following Jesus does not guarantee a life free from hardship. Storms come to everyone, including those walking faithfully in obedience. The real question is not how to avoid difficulty but where we fix our eyes when difficulty arrives. A fresh vision of Jesus is the greatest antidote to fear, because peace is not the absence of storms. It is the presence of Christ.
