In the Word and At the Table

The story of two disciples walking to Emmaus reveals how we can encounter the resurrected Christ today. Though the exact location of Emmaus remains a mystery and one disciple goes unnamed, these details may be intentionally incomplete so we can see ourselves in the story. Jesus revealed himself to these disciples in two specific ways: through explaining Scripture and through breaking bread. These same encounters are available to us today when we engage deeply with God's Word and participate in communion with expectation. Christ continues to reveal himself to his people gathered in community around Scripture and the sacrament.
